Join us for a free professional development series focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion with a special emphasis on issues of aging. The series is designed for both new and experienced social work professionals.

This free Lunch and Learn series consists of four, one hour-long sessions available on Zoom. CEUs will be available.
Descriptions of each session and the learning objectives are located in the table below.

Each session will take place from 12:00 am to 1:00 pm PST.

The Lunch and Learn series will be hosted by Gabriela Flores, who has over twenty-five years of experience working in the realm of health and human services, with an emphasis on language of access, diversity, and equity. She currently serves as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Metropolitan Community College.  Flores previously served as the Director of the Office of Equity and Diversity at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. All GSWEC alumni, current students, faculty, and social work colleagues are encouraged to participate.

Session #1: Unconscious Bias for Healthcare Professionals (60 mins)
  • Describe the effects of unconscious bias in everyday interactions with students, colleagues, and team members.
  • Describe how bias and the processes of the unconscious mind can impact critical decisions and results.
  • Examine where personal and structural unconscious biases may reside across an organization.
  • Apply strategies to correct and mitigate personal unconscious biases and practice more conscious awareness.

Session #2: Cultural Humility (60 mins)
  • Define cultural humility as it relates to trauma and toxic stress.
  • Describe how unconscious bias can affect the healing relationship between patients and families.
  • Recognize how you influence, and are influenced by, others.
  • Identify how cultural humility and trauma-informed care can promote reduction of health disparities.

Session #3: Understanding the Dynamics of Difference (60 mins)
  • Create an understanding of the dynamics of difference in cross-cultural interactions.
  • Define the range of the dynamics of difference, including power and privilege.
  • Explain the impact of personal culture and unconscious bias on communication.

Session #4: Addressing Social Determinants in a Healthcare Setting (60 Mins)
  • Define health inequities, social determinants of health and review key research findings related to the correlation.
  • Discuss how race, place, health literacy, and education are impacted by diversity and culture.
  • Explain the importance of social determinants of health.
